The EPA National Primary Drinking Water Standards are legally enforceable concentration limits for contaminants in public-water supply. These concentration limits apply to public-water systems only and include limits for selected microorganisms, inorganic chemicals, organic chemicals, radionuclides, disinfectants, and disinfectant by products.
The EPA National Secondary Drinking Water Standards are non-mandatory concentration limits for 15 constituents/contaminants in public-water supply. These concentration limits are guidelines for public-water systems only and are for aesthetic considerations, such as taste, color, and odor. These contaminants are not considered to present a risk to human health.
