Below is a list of laboratories in and near Oklahoma that test water for various water-quality constituents. For business or legal situations involving water used for human consumption, testing should be performed at a certified drinking-water lab. For instance, tests for bacteria, nitrate nitrogen, or lead, often required for real estate transactions, should be performed at Accurate Environmental, OK DEQ State Environmental lab, or another certified drinking-water lab. On the other hand, water testing for hardness or dissolved solids used for household water-treatment decisions, can also be performed at an environmental lab such as Environmental Testing or the OSU Extension testing services.
What's the difference? Drinking-water labs are required to strictly comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act and other regulations established by the EPA for drinking water because of the direct impact of water quality on human health. In Oklahoma, lab certification comes from the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program, or the Oklahoma Dept. of Environmental Quality. Rigorous quality-assurance and quality-control procedures are required and must be validated through tests for accuracy, precision, and consistency.
Whereas, environmental labs have general lab certifications, which allow them to perform a variety of analyses based on the type of water usage, such as agriculture, wastewater, oil field, aquaculture, etc. Environmental labs adhere to standards set by the EPA or specific environmental regulations.
If you submit a water sample for testing to one of the labs listed below, it's always a good idea to contact the lab beforehand to inquire about services provided, turnaround time, bottle requirements, sampling protocols, and lab fees.
